You might wonder why I did not submit Marivoe to the official Theme Store, given all the extra eyeballs and potential extra sales it could bring. Even though Marivoe fully meets Shopify's theme requirements, I decided not to list it there for now, because doing so comes with some real drawbacks.

First, Shopify forbids me from selling my own theme on my own website if I list it in their Theme Store.

Second, Shopify requires listed themes to limit how far you can customize them, so no two stores end up looking too alike. To be honest, I did not want to hold Marivoe back from features it could otherwise have, just because listed themes are capped.

Third, Shopify does not let me run discounts on my theme, which I am not a fan of. As a Shopify store owner yourself, you know a good discount is one of the best ways to win over a hesitant buyer, so losing that option is kind of lame.

Fourth, Shopify owns the entire sale and the account, which means I cannot email you after you buy my theme. As a Shopify store owner you will recognize what a big no-go that is. It is like selling on Amazon instead of on your own store: Amazon gives you a distribution channel, but you do not own the contacts buying your products, and marketing-wise, owning your own store beats an Amazon store every time.

The trade-off is that I have to do my own marketing, since Shopify is not out there finding customers for my theme. For a theme that stays genuinely mine, and yours, I think that is well worth it.
